Meet Federal Airlines: Your Gateway to the African Safari Skies

When dreaming of an African safari, you’re probably imagining golden savannahs, elephant herds at sunset, and luxurious lodges tucked away in the wilderness. What you may not realise is that the journey to these extraordinary places can be just as special as the destination itself.

Federal Airlines doesn’t just fly you there. We create an unforgettable welcome when you choose us as your preferred means of travel in South Africa. FedAir is the trusted name in African safari flights, offering a refined and reliable way to begin your luxury safari escape.

Who is federal Airlines?

With more than 20 years of experience in private flights to game reserves, FedAir has become the go-to name for travellers heading into the wild. But make no mistake, we’re not your typical airline for African Safari Flights. Think of us instead as an extension of the luxury lodges we serve, delivering guests directly into the heart of the bush with ease, comfort and care.

In the 1990s, FedAir pioneered the concept of lodge-to-lodge air travel in Southern Africa. Since then, we’ve been connecting safari-goers to iconic game reserves across South Africa, including the world-renowned Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, Timbavati, Madikwe, Hoedspruit, Kruger National Park, Marakele and Phinda Private Game.

For many, federal Airlines is a vital part of the safari experience. With exclusive flights to game reserves, the adventure begins as soon as you arrive in Johannesburg. From the moment you check in, you’re in expert hands, flying with a team that understands not only the logistics of remote travel but the magic of safari itself. This level of care and access is what defines a luxury safari transfer in South Africa.

Two Ways to Fly with FedAir

FedAir offers two distinct ways to elevate your journey. African safari flights or private getaways should feel like part of the adventure, not a means to an end. And with both options, Federal Airlines delivers just that.

1. Shuttle Flights

Shuttle flights are daily flights operating from a dedicated private terminal at OR Tambo International Airport and Kruger Mpumpalanga International Airport. These short flights, often referred to as Lodge Hops, offer stunning aerial views of the South African landscapes as you glide into remote airstrips just minutes from your lodge. These are ideal for guests looking to avoid lengthy road transfers and arrive refreshed, in the heart of the African bush.

2. Private Charter Flights

FedAir’s Private Charter services offer discerning travellers the ultimate in exclusivity, flexibility and convenience. From intimate journeys to group charters and corporate travel, we connect you seamlessly to any destination be it safari lodges, coastal escapes, golf resorts, and private villas across Southern Africa.

Each flight is designed around your schedule, preferences and sense of adventure, delivering effortless access with uncompromising standards of comfort, safety and luxury air travel.

What to Expect Onboard with FedAir

Before take-off, guests are welcomed into FedAir’s private facilities at Bonaero Park or Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. These dedicated lounges offer a peaceful atmosphere with warm South African hospitality, personalised service, and space to unwind.

Once onboard, the experience continues to impress. Our modern aircraft are designed for group safari travel, offering comfort, privacy and spectacular views. On our shuttle flights, guests can look forward to light refreshments, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable journey. For those seeking an elevated level of personalisation, our private charters provide custom catering and bespoke service, with every detail tailored to your unique preferences.

FAQs About Flying with FedAir

What is the Baggage Allowance for Safari Flights?

Due to the smaller aircraft used for lodge transfers, baggage allowance for safari flights is more limited than on international airlines. Guests are allowed a total of 20kg (44lbs), and 5kg(11lbs) of hand luggage. Bags must preferably be soft-sided (duffel or similar). Hard shell bags are permitted; however, they must adhere to specific size, shape, and weight restrictions. Maximum luggage size per piece is 40cm (16 inches) wide x 30cm (12 inches) high x 60cm (24 inches) long. Any excess luggage over 20kgs or special equipment needs to be pre-booked and pre-advised with our reservations team.

Can I Take a Private Flight to My Game Reserve or Other Remote Destination?

Absolutely. Private flights to game reserves are one of FedAir’s most popular services. Whether you’re heading into the wild or out to the coast, private charter flights in South Africa allow for total flexibility and discretion. It’s all part of the personalised approach that defines luxury safari transfers in South Africa.

Are African Safari Flights Safe?

Yes, safety is at the core of everything FedAir does. Each aircraft is meticulously maintained, and every flight is operated in accordance with strict safety standards set by the Civil Aviation Authority. You can trust that your journey with FedAir is not just scenic but secure.
